The U.S. Constitution is remarkably resilient. It has survived more than two centuries because it has been able to accommodate massive transformations in American life. The constitutional system provides Americans many opportunities to participate in local, state, and national affairs. The Constitution's resilience will continue to be tested. In order to be succssful in this unit, you must be able to identify the different challenges plaguing the nation today and be able to create your own ideas on how to go about them. Furthermore, you must be able to identify the measures that government has taken to address these issues.

Citizenship
U.S. immigration policy has been a touchstone of political debate for decades as policymakers consider U.S. labor demands and border security concerns. Comprehensive immigration reform has eluded Congress for years, moving decisions into the executive and judicial branches of government and pushing the debate into the halls of state and municipal governments. Meanwhile, the fates of the estimated eleven million undocumented immigrants in the country, as well as future rules for legal migration, lie in the balance.

Political Participation
Sadly, the United States has one of the lowest records of political participation in the Industrialized nations of the world. Voter turnout is often low and recent data has shown that Americans currently engaged in a process of dealignment from the party system. Furthermore, political apathy has become the new norm as many Americans are loosing faith in government.

Protection of Civil Rights and Civil Rights
The framers of the the Constitution created the document in a way that would allow it to evolve in order to form a more perfect union. However, even today, a lot of work still needs to be done in order to ensure that every individual in America has the rights that millions of men and women have died for. Our country continues to disservice minority groups such as Women, immigrants, African Americans, and the LGBTQ community. Other infractions on individual rights such as NSA data collection, Voter ID laws, and bans on same sex marriage in many states, threaten to undo the progress that this country has made in guaranteeing equal protection of the law.

National Security and Surveillance
Ever since the aftermath of 9/11 and the passage of the Patriot Act, the United States has morphed into a surveillance state int he name of national security. While some Americans are comfortable with government data collection on a mass scale, others are furious to have their right to privacy infringed upon by the federal government.
